Aloha Friday - Wish

Hope all of you had a wonderful week; it's time, for most of us, to wind down from a busy week. Today's post will be a bit abbreviated because it won't have any links. So sorry about that...

I'm trying to rush through this, because I am just exhausted. Teagan has come down with a harsh ear infection. He woke up, Thursday, grouchy and complaining that his ear was sore. We decided to watch him for the morning. The remainder of the morning was good and he didn't complain. By mid afternoon he developed a low grade fever and we took him in to see the doctor who started him on antibiotics for an ear infection. When we got home he played with his sister and his cousin without event. Later that evening, we rounded the twins up to take a bath when we noticed Teagan was burning up. Long story short, he's running a 102.5 temperature and we're trying to break it now. I just took his temperature and it was 99.5 so it's much better. We've got the twins in our room laid out on a futon mattress so that we can keep an eye on Teagan, monitor his temperature, and give him his acetaminophen around the clock for tonight.

It's just sad to see such a rambunctious little guy so listless and almost lethargic. But children are such resilient little creatures...he'll probably wake up in the morning with his engine revving!

Copics used... I also have to apologize for the Copic coloring portion of the video. I had my hand angled in such a manner that I was obstructing the view of my coloring. Next time I'll be more conscientious of my hand positioning. I find it very difficult to color on camera, so I normally try and stay away from stamps that require more intricate coloring. I color with my face about 10 - 15 centimeters above my paper. My face is, literally, buried in that paper.

Opps! I almost forgot to mention that this is not the actual card that I made in the video. It is, but it isn't. I had to redo the card after I shot the video. A Little Something...

This card is a duo challenge card from Splitcoast Stampers. It's Sketch Challenge 195 and a Ways To Use It Challenge 185. The Ways To Use It challenge this week is called "Charmed, I'm Sure" and you are required to use a charm on your project. I decided to make my own charm today using PolyShrink. I've been using PolyShrink in some of my projects recently so I wanted to share with you the process of creating something with this product. The only real "rule" or guideline that I can think of is using an ink that will not smear on a smooth surface like StazOn or Palette Hybrid ink.

Aloha Friday - Cats Have Staff!

Aloha!!! It's Aloha Friday? YES, it's Aloha Friday! How fast are these coming?! Okay, I really have to think about Christmas now. I may have to start a Christmas card counter on the side of my blog so that you guys can keep me in check! Anyhoot, I really want to thank all of you again for all the well wishes. I still have not had the chance to read them yet, but will hopefully have time tomorrow. I'm still incredibly behind on emails, as usual...so an apology there, again! I will try my best to get through at least a couple weeks worth of emails dated from early July, Yikes! I'm also a week behind on design team stuff, so I'll have to get my okole (it means behind or rear end in Hawaiian) in gear this weekend! I'm looking forward to a weekend of family, stamping, and Olympics. I'm such a huge sports fanatic that Olympic week is a total dream for me with nothing but sports on 24/7!!!

Well I am excited to share with you my newest edition to my stamp collection. These stamps are from The Cat's Pajamas. The set is called It's A Mod, Mod World. How cool is this set? It's just so different from anything out there. Stop by The Cat's Pajama, if you haven't already, and see all the amazing products that Alma has to offer!

I wanted to show all of you an option for using acetate as a base for a card since it's so hot now. Acetate can be your friend AND it can be your worst enemy at times. The absolute challenge with acetate is it's most endearing quality as well ~ it's transparency. Because of the transparency you have to worry about some things that you often don't worry about ~ like the back of your images and paper. You also have to think about the adhesive showing through. To solve this problem you can sandwich images between the acetate like I show you in the video. I adhere a stamped circle to the front and then it's matte on the other side of the acetate. In doing it this way you sandwich the glue or adhesive between the circles making it look clean on the inside of the card. I stamped the spaceship directly to the acetate using StazOn ink. Now you can see the ship from the outside and inside. I placed dimensionals on the black parts of the ship so that it would not be visible from the inside and stuck a pink colored ship on top of that. For the inside of the card where I placed Mr. Kittie I used vellum glue dots. Vellum glue dots are intended to use with vellum. If you used vellum before you know that when you use any adhesive other than vellum adhesive, the adhesive will show through. It's very unattractive. So I've found that the vellum glue dots work perfectly for acetate as well.

Before I go I also wanted to quickly address a question that I often get asked. "How do you choose colors for your projects?" "Where do you start?"

When I start a project I have an inspiration in mind. If I have patterned paper that I want to use, I choose my colors from that. I usually choose 2 colors of solid Stampin' Up! paper that coordinates with that patterned paper. Sometimes I'll use just 1 color that coordinates, but rarely will I ever do more than 3 colors. This is just my preference. To me, I feel like it gets too busy if you go beyond 4 colors. If I want to use 2 or more pieces of patterned paper, I will usually stick with paper from the same company. Patterned paper from the same company will usually tend to match nicely with each other. For this particular card today I used ribbon as my inspiration. I knew I wanted to use this ribbon so I chose paper that matched the colors of the ribbon. This is also how I choose what colors to use on my stamped images. Rarely will I ever color an image before picking out the paper. I usually always know what colors I am using on the card before I begin to color an image. This is to ensure the colors on the stamped image will coordinate with the paper. It's just easier for me this way, but you can certainly work the other way if you wanted to. Color the image then find paper to match the stamped image.

Aloha Friday ~ Connor!

Happy Aloha Friday!! Today is the luckiest day in this millennium according to the Chinese. So I hope this good luck finds all of you!

Tomorrow we will be celebrating my Chubby-Wubbies first birthday. I'm so very excited for this day. He's my one and only nephew and I simply adore him to pieces; since he lives in California my visits with him have been few and far between. I wanted to make him a special card for tomorrow.

In the video I give an abbreviated beginner "run through" on Copics. It's fast, but it's a start. Hopefully I can pull together an actual tutorial, but being a beginner myself, I still feel apprehensive about my knowledge of the topic. However, I will try my best to learn more.

Just Because...

And so another Aloha Friday is upon us! Wowza, a new month too! I have to seriously start thinking Christmas because I'm a serious procrastinator. I will do my shopping in advance so I can enjoy the holiday season ~ so she says...every year! But this year I mean it ~ so she says, again...EVERY year. But this year will be different ~ so she says, again...EVERY, EVERY year. But it will!!! LOL!

Anyhoot, here's a simple card for ya'll using another Splitcoast Stamper's Challenge. These sketches are always fun to work with and they can be extremely useful when you're having brain farts and mojo issues. I usually go for stretches where I do lots of challenges to give my brain a break. It helps me revitalize; I recharge and do my own thing for a while and then go back to challenges again. Fun stuff!

The card is simple; there are lots of layers, but for the most part that's all it is. The stamping was nothing more than a couple of flowers and some stems.

I used Classic Ink pads which are dye based inks with VersaMark so I could emboss with it. All you do is load your stamp with VersaMark, then ink it up with your dye ink. This makes the ink that you lay down sticky enough to grab the embossing powder. I will be posting a tutorial on ink pad basics and embossing this weekend, so stay tuned for that.
